Before the transition, the foreign trades of eastern-and central-European economies were characterized by a dualism of trade, as the flows of trade with the Comecon and with the rest of the world were comparatively separated. This resulted in bipolar specialization, and consequently east-European products were hardly competitive on world markets. As well as by the running of the Comecon, the specialization of central-and east-European countries was influenced by a planned organization of foreign trade, inconvertibility and internal features peculiar to shortage economies.
