Like any muscle, cardiac contraction is evoked by action potentials. In the healthy heart, atrial and ventricular activation occur through impulse conduction via the rapid conduction system. Normal cardiac function requires a highly synchronized series of mechanical events occurring in the atria and the ventricles. This synchronization is achieved by rapid conduction of action potentials through the electrical conduction system, which leads to coordinated mechanical activation and deactivation of the myocardium — a process known as electromechanical coupling.
