Shell model calculations using the effective interaction approach of Talmi are reported in part I of this thesis for the nuclei of mass numbers 6 to 9. Difficulty experienced in the simultaneous fitting of excitation energies of levels in these nuclei is discussed, and the possible connection of this difficulty with the deformations of ⁸Be and ⁹Be is indicated . The obtained effective interaction is shown to give either equally good or better agreement with the experimental data than the ones achieved by previous authors
