The thesis of this study is that the dissolution of marriage among Javanese Muslims in the area I investigated is governed by Islam in a number of ways. First, Islam is the source of law which regulates divorce. Second, Islamic divorce law is administrated by the religious officialdom. Third, socially, Islamic teachings which provide the bases for divorce law are actualized by religious teachers and leaders. Fourth, the personal conduct of the divorcing parties accords with Islamic teachings
