Over the past year or more there has been a refreshing sea breeze passing through the area of Chinese Australian history. Some of this change has its origins in a number of seminars and conferences held over the past five years, which are now finding their way into journals, books and other publications.1 This scholarship will contribute to a much more precise and informed discourse on the history of the Chinese people in Australia, particularly in the fields of historical archaeology, material culture and racial identity, and the momentum is poised to continue
