Background : Persons with mental health disorders (MHD) have higher rates of smoking and poorer cessation of smoking outcomes than those without MHD. A decreased level of motivation may partially explain lower cessation rates, but there is little information on motivation among inpatients with MHD. Objectives: Primary aims were to compare (1) motivation to cease smoking among those hospitalised with MHD or non-MHD, (2) the proportion that attempted smoking cessation, and (3) use of aids to cessation.
