This article traces the parallel histories of the Catholic and Protestant missionary movements in the past two centuries (1800-2000). The history is separated into three periods : pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial. Each period shows striking parallels between the two denominations, but also the presence of competition between them. Indeed, this competition served to stimulate those involved and to push them to formalize their project and to anchor it in reality.
