Mission et colonisation : l’étonnant parallélisme des « cas » protestant et catholique aux XIXe-XXe siècles

This article traces the parallel histories of the Catholic and Protestant missionary movements in the past two centuries (1800-2000). The history is separated into three periods : pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial. Each period shows striking parallels between the two denominations, but also the presence of competition between them. Indeed, this competition served to stimulate those involved and to push them to formalize their project and to anchor it in reality. Four criteria have been selected to bring out the parallels : the philosophical and cultural framework defining the birth and the development of the missionary idea ; the spiritual message which the missionary institutions brought ; the developing socio-political context which brings out the trends in the relationship between colonialism and the missionary movement ; the vision and the role of the Church which was born out of the missionary movement along with its institutions and staff.Cet article se propose de faire l’histoire parallèle des missions catholiques et protestantes, au cours des deux derniers siècles (1800-2000), découpés en trois périodes : pré-coloniale, coloniale et post coloniale. Dans chacune de ces périodes, on repère un parallélisme frappant des deux confessions, ce qui n’exclut pas la concurrence entre elles ; au contraire, cette concurrence stimule les acteurs et les oblige à formaliser leur projet et à l’enraciner dans la réalité. Quatre critères du parallélisme sont retenus : le cadre philosophique et culturel dans lequel naît et évolue l’idée missionnaire, la spiritualité qui porte le projet de la mission, le contexte socio-politique et ses évolutions qui permettent de thématiser les rapports entre mission et colonisation, la vision et le rôle de l’Église qui naît de la mission, ses institutions et son personnel.Zorn Jean-François.
