In France, there is widespread agreement about using grades to measure strudents' education. A scrupulous statistical study based, in particular, on comparing grades in the last year of secondary school with marks on the school-leavers' examination (baccalauréat) proves this consensus is a matter of belief. The slight reliability of grades and the selection of the best are not incompatible when two contexts are taken into account, namely the effects of extremes and of report cards.
