Based on an analysis covering the period 1950-1980, this article shows that the degree of cohesion within the employers' group and the degree of unity within the labour movement are determinating factors to explain the development of collective bargaining at company and at industry level. Two subsystems of collective bargaining are thus identified : the first one, specific to oligopolistical industries (steel, oil, glass, cement), is based on the articulation between company level and industry level, while in the second one, found in a majority of industries (metallurgy, construction, chemistry...), these levels remain separate.
