On the basis of a 1986 survey of 830 secondary school students in Elbeuf (a small, industrial, working class town in Normandy), the theory of social reproduction is critically reviewed. The growing demand for education, as a result of the increasing number of course options (in particular technical ones), centers these student's conceptions of their familial and occupational futures around the effect of school as a means of promotion. Can we continue seeing this sort of conception as but a means of submission, disenchantment and consecration, in line with Bourdieux's arguments ?
