Over the past fifteen years, the archaeology of the higher Middle- Ages in Tournai benefited from major discoveries in the districts of Saint-Brice's, Saint- Pierre's and around the Notre-Dame Cathedral. They give more accuracy to the image of the antique inheritance of the capital city of the Tournai county and add material data to the royal stays in Tournai testified in the Merlovingian period. Even if a high number of questions remain suspended and if some of these sites still wait for being exhaustively published, it seemed seasonable to deliver a new synthesis summing up the acquisitions and giving an up-to-date archaeological landscape of the city up to the eve of the second millenium. For so doing, we also draw on the written sources likely to help us in the reading of archaeological topography. Their scarcity and the acrid criticism to which they were subjected on the part of the historians have yet no other equal than the very special constraints of the conservation of the underground records, conditioned by the unceasing remodeling which has characterized the urban areas ever since Antiquity, and than their accessibility when they have been preserved.Durant les quinze dernières années, l'archéologie du haut Moyen Age à Tournai a fait l'objet de découvertes importantes dans le quartier Saint-Brice, dans le quartier Saint-Pierre et autour de la cathédrale Notre-Dame. Elles précisent notamment l'image de l'héritage antique dans le chef-lieu tournaisien et matérialisent quelque peu le cadre des séjours royaux attestés à la période mérovingienne. Même si de très nombreuses questions restent en suspens et si certains de ces sites attendent d'être exhaustivement publiés, il semblait opportun de livrer une nouvelle synthèse récapitulant les acquis en brossant un paysage archéologique actualisé de la ville jusqu'à l'aube du second millénaire. A cet effet, nous évoquons également les sources écrites susceptibles de nous aider dans la lecture de la topographie archéologique. Leur rareté et la critique acerbe conduite par les historiens n'ont cependant d'égales que les contraintes très particulières de conservation des archives du sous-sol, conditionnées par les aménagements incessants qui caractérisent le milieu urbain depuis l'Antiquité, et les modalités de leur accès quand elles sont préservées.Laurent Verslype, Hoogmiddeleeuwse archéologie te Doornik. Langs de vijftien laatste jaren te Doornik is hoogmiddeleeuwse archéologie nader verklaart geweest door belangrijke ontdekkingen te Saint-Brice, te Saint-Pierre en rond de Onze-Lieve-Vrouw kathedraal. De romeinse stad's erfenis mag nu als stoffelijk beschouwd zijn, eve- nals het stedelijk raam van het merovingisch koninklijk verblijf vanaf de Vde tot aan de Vllde eeuw. Vele vragen blijven ongeantwoordt, en enkele sites zijn steeds onge- publiceerd. Het schijnt nochtans belangwekkend de gegevens door een korte synthèse aan te herinneren. Daarvoor hebben we de nuttige geschreven bronnen ook kenmerkt. Maar ze zijn schaars voor zover archeolo- gische bronnen, meestal gedeeltelijk of slechts bewaard.
