Tanaquil, Tullia and Damarata: Women Secretly Advising Kings in Livy’s History of Rome and the Degradation of Monarchy Tanaquil and Tullia were “kingmakers” but also skillful political advisers, and so was Damarata, who talked Adranadorus into seizing power in Syracuse in 214 BC. These women resorted to the same rhetorical strategies to persuade their husbands, but, more importantly, they appear in episodes where a particular issue, both political and institutional, was at stake: the succession to the throne after a king’s death. The analysis of those scenes shows that Livy developed a literary motif to highlight the role played by the adviser and by personal ambition in the degradation of monarchy into tyranny.Tanaquil et Tullia sont des «...
