Coal mining of northern France began in 1757 (North department), in 1842 (Pas-de-Calais department). The exploitation exceeded 2.2 Gt that is roughly equivalent to a cube kilometer. Such a void has given rise to many unsolved questions. However, coal mining din't affect the only underground but the open air surface as well : all the mining activities (stockage, heavy industry, décantation) have left derelicted industrial areas and wastelands.
