Up to the suspension of immigration in 1974, almost all foreign families came to France without admittance procedure ; their legal situation was settled afterwards (94 % in 1971 ; 84 % in 1974). However, the great extent of familial immigration changed the nature of the migration. It raises two problems : the social insertion of foreign women (in particular, their professional insertion) and the problem of the future of the "second generation". Only recently, with the economical crisis, has the Government considered the status of foreign women and children of immigrants, but without seeming to adopt a global policy. J.
