Shingle beaches are effective barriers against the sea. These deposits are becoming increasingly subject to a number of breakdown processes that include more frequent breaching, submersion and accelerated retreat. Although changes in certain natural parameters influencing barrier dynamics, such as increased storm frequency and sea-level rise, may be involved in this breakdown, the main causes of barrier degradation reside in economic pressures during the 19 th and the 20 th centuries.Les accumulations de galets forment de véritables barrières naturelles contre les agressions marines.
