The sea traffic of the United Kingdom. In 1989, freight traffic through the ports of the United Kingdom was 480 million tonnes (Mt) in which domestic traffic accounted for 37 % (178 Mt). Since 1970, this traffic has increased by 110 Mt. The increase results from the development in trade with the European Economic Community and from the exploitation of crude oil from the North Sea, since 1976. Crude oil exports and coastal movement of petroleum products are a very important part of the total traffic. London is the leading port with 54 Mt. The pipeline terminal port of Sullom Voe in the Shetland Islands had the second largest tonnage (41 Mt).
