The sea traffic of the United Kingdom. In 1989, freight traffic through the ports of the United Kingdom was 480 million tonnes (Mt) in which domestic traffic accounted for 37 % (178 Mt). Since 1970, this traffic has increased by 110 Mt. The increase results from the development in trade with the European Economic Community and from the exploitation of crude oil from the North Sea, since 1976. Crude oil exports and coastal movement of petroleum products are a very important part of the total traffic. London is the leading port with 54 Mt. The pipeline terminal port of Sullom Voe in the Shetland Islands had the second largest tonnage (41 Mt). The increasing use of container and ro-ro modes of transport benefitted several ports particularly Felixstowe and Dover. In 1989, 29 million passenger journeys by sea were registered to or from the United Kingdom. The number of accompanied passenger cars travelling on foreign sea routes was 4,4 million. Sullom Voe, terminal d'un oléoduc aux îles Shetland, occupe la seconde place (41 Mt). La progression du trafic conteneurisé et roulier a profité à plusieurs ports notamment Felixstowe et Douvres. En 1989, le trafic maritime de passagers entre le Royaume et l'étranger a porté sur 29 millions de personnes ; le nombre de véhicules de tourisme accompagnés étant de 4,4 millions.
