Selective migration in The Netherlands. The case of the Northeast Polder

The Noordoostpolder -Northeast Polder, the second polder of the Zuiderzee reclaiming works -is a popular example of a planned spatial unit. The «Polder» has been realised in the forties and fifties. It was not less than an ideal society that the planners had in mind. Nowadays this recent example of «total planning» has to deal with problems of stagnation. Since the colonization of the new polder society has changed. The ideas of the spatial planners of the Noordoostpolder do not seem to fit in today's world anymore. The polder and especially the planned villages are encountered with the consequences of structural scale-enlargement and socio-cultural change. The future of the polder and her settlements depends on choices that have to be made within this frame of structural, irreversible developments. The area is an outstanding example of what happens today in the peripheral rural areas of the Netherlands and probably also in other western countries.Le Polder du Nord-Est, le second polder du Zuiderzee est un exemple bien connu d'unité spatiale aménagée, réalisé dans les années 1940 et 1950. C'est une idée de société idéale qu'avaient en tête les aménageurs. Aujourd'hui cet exemple d'aménagement global est confronté à des problèmes de stagnation. Depuis la colonisation du nouveau polder, la société a changé, et les idées des aménageurs du polder du Nord-Est ne semblent plus adaptées au monde actuel. Le polder, et spécialement les villages planifiés, sont confrontés aux conséquences des changements socioculturels et des changements d'échelle structurelle. L'avenir du polder et de son peuplement dépend des choix à faire dans ce cadre de développement structurel irréversible. La région est un exemple remarquable de ce qui se passe aujourd'hui dans les zones rurales périphériques des Pays-Bas et probablement aussi dans d'autres pays occidentaux.Volkers Kees.
