Peripherality is a major cause of the economic problems of lagging regions. Improved transport infrastructure can increase the competitiveness of such regions. The United Kingdom has a peripheral locatin in Europe which the Channel Tunnel may change. This paper reviews the likely static consequences of the completion of the Tunnel and argues that these may be relatively marginal. There are problems in both the measurement of changes in accessibility and in the possibility of remaining «frontier» or «corridor » effects. However, a longer term and more dynamic analysis is outlined which suggests that a more positive view of the impact of Tunnel could ultimately be taken although the geographical distribution of benefits is still uncertain.La ...
