From its beginning in 1839, photography played an important part in exploring and representing urban environments. Much of this was a simple celebration and souvenir of the city for tourist and resident alike, but a small part of the growing output of photographs were closely linked to urban improvement schemes. This paper examines an early collection of such photographs from Edinburgh and asks what part they played in urban «improvements » of the second half of the century.Morris Robert John.
