The 1882-1886 school laws secularizing at first the syllabus and then the very personnel of primary education constituted a definite cultural revolution in the Nord/Pas-de-Calais where religious habits were deeply rooted. These latter hindered the enforcement of the first of these laws, with the complicity of local authorities, of the teaching staff itself and even of government officials. Antagonism was keener with the 1886 law since people were then actually involved and the political eddies of the time weighed down on the speed of secularisation.
