H.-J. Jean le Patourel : Medieval moated sites and their problems, the organisation of moat study in Britain. The moated sites research group in England is concerned to list all moats and to publish an annual bulletin dealing with their problems. Though over a hundred have been partly excavated, neither this nor documentary research has answered the questions posed by individual sites nor the relation-ship of these sites to the medieval village. Of the 3 known types of medieval seignorial earthworks, motte and bailey castles, ring works and moats, moated sites are the latest, spanning the period between the 12th and 16th centuries, with a peak in the 13th century.
