From tree to forest, from monuments to urban and rural entities In France the notion of héritage emerged during the French Révolution to become a key social issue. From the law of 1913 introducing the idea of «historical monuments» to the law of 1993 setting up Héritage Protection Areas (ZPPAUP) there is no shortage of regulations for protecting remarkable structures or neighbourhoods (even if these rules are sometimes used for other ends). However large parts of our urban, industrial or rural heritage are now disappearing and the landscape is gradually being eaten away by developments that make no allowance for the past.
