The spectacular and massive deaths at sea of migrants, in search of Europe, stranded on the island of Lampedusa off the coast of Italy, have drawn attention to the difficulty in extreme circumstances for international lawyers to reconcile the objectives of immigration control with the respect of basic human rights.
