The angular variation of ESR lines is used to localize Fe3+ in trioctahedral and dioctahedral smectites : vermiculites, saponites, beidellites, montmorillonites and chlorites. Chlorite exhibits a resonance line at g~2.0 : this line is attributed to Oh sites, created by substitution of Fe3+ for Mg2+ in the brucite sheet.
