The authors studied the interaction between clay minerals and lignosulfonates as a function of pH. In acid medium, they observe the fixation of lignosulfonates by a topochemical reaction on the surfaces of the clay mineral flakes, accompanied by the formation of a coprecipitate. This reaction was pointed out by visible spectroscopy by using a synthetic coloured Ni hectorite. In alkaline medium, the fixation of long-chain organic molecules by «hydrogen bridges» takes place on the external basal surfaces of clay mineral flakes. The dispersed clay particles are then coated with the lignosulfonate molecules.
