Formation et caractérisation des complexes polystyrène-montmorillonite

The styrene polymerisation can be initiated by an acid montmorillonite. It gives a complex material containing a fairly important part of clay-bonded polymer. As shown by both thermogravimetry and electron microscopy, this polymer is partly an external one, and chiefly an insertion polymer. By suitable treating of this material, amines can be fixed upon the end of the insertion polymer chains, thus increasing its resistance to solvents and thermolysis. The cationic reaction mechanism was confirmed by isobutene polymerisation under the same conditions. Others swelling clay minerals were used.La polymérisation du styrène peut être initiée par une montmorillonite acide. On obtient un matériau complexe pouvant contenir une assez importante proportion de polymère lié à l'argile. Comme le montrent les études en A. T.G. et microscopie électronique, le polymère lié est partiellement un polymère externe et majoritairement un polymère inséré entre les feuillets. Par traitement approprié de ce matériau on peut fixer des fonctions amines enfin de chaîne du polymère inséré, ce qui permet d'améliorer la résistance du matériau aux solvants et à la chaleur. Le mécanisme cationique de la réaction a été confirmé par la polymérisation de l'isobutène dans les mêmes conditions. D'autres phyllites gonflantes ont été utilisées.Vallet M., Pézerat Henri.
