15 kaolins, 42 clays from the Provins Basin and 34 clays from the Aquitaine Basin, all of which are clay minerals of the kaolinite family, were the subject of a comparative study by means of different analytical methods : chemical analysis, thermogravimetry, differential heat analysis, granulometry, X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and measurement of expansion. Furthermore, a correlation was established between the percentage of impurities in the clay minerals studied and the aspect of the expansion -contraction curves, both when increasing from 200°C as well as when decreasing in temperature during the expansion tests.
