The Bird of Jove and the Identity of the Stella Miluus (Ov. Fast. III, 793-808)

This article argues that the star (stella) in Fast. III, 793-808 is Altair (Aquilae), which Ovid may have originally described by means of the participle mulcens rather than by the name Miluus. This proposed new identification is consistent with the story of the bird that Ovid tells in connection with the stella. It is compatible with considerations of the scansion and orthography in the two verses in which the word appears. And it is reflective of Ovid’s attention to astronomical accuracy in the poem.Cet article soutient que l’étoile (stella) dans Ovide, Fast. III, 793-808 est Altair (Aquilae). Il est possible qu’Ovide ait décrit Altair au moyen du participe mulcens au lieu du nom Miluus. Cette nouvelle identification est compatible avec le récit de l’oiseau qui est raconté par Ovide en rapport avec la stella. Elle est conciliable avec la scansion et l’orthographe dans les deux versets où le mot apparaît et elle reflète l’attention que porte Ovide à la précision astronomique dans le poème.Lewis Anne-Marie.
