This article argues that the star (stella) in Fast. III, 793-808 is Altair (Aquilae), which Ovid may have originally described by means of the participle mulcens rather than by the name Miluus. This proposed new identification is consistent with the story of the bird that Ovid tells in connection with the stella. It is compatible with considerations of the scansion and orthography in the two verses in which the word appears.
