Abstract

Britain's conversion to "metric" (the SI) is a cultural revolution triggered by irresistible economic forces. Historically, the British and U.S. systems of weights and measures evolved under twin influences : the need for unifying national markets (without ignoring protectionist possibilities), and economic expansionism. A survey of the various stages of metrication, both legal and practical, suggests that those are still the active forces today, within a world balance modified, among others, by the emerging European Community.
