At a time when China is displaying her maritime ambition, it is interesting to revisit the long process of expansion of its maritime spaces between the 14th and the early 19th centuries. This is a time during which the coastal line was finally integrated into the imperial security system through the establishment, at the beginning of the Ming dynasty, of a fortifications network covering the entire Chinese littoral, and the reconsideration of this organization with the irruption of European powers in the middle of the 19th century.
