From 1945, the revolutionary government appropriated the term thoât ly (lit. separation) to incite young Vietnamese to break with village and family traditions and join the national liberation movement. This is the point of departure for this study of a pre-revolutionary socio-political culture which, through a system of moral values inspired by popular Confucianism, bound villagers to their village, to the land of their ancestors, to their "place of home" (quê huong).
