This article applies a spatial analysis to the study of Sumatran political culture by undertaking a close reading of royal letters emanating from two different parts of the island. In each case the local sources examined here reveal a more pressing concern with place and space than is often suggested in European accounts. In both Acehnese and Minangkabau sources topogeny, or the recitation of place names, is part of the language used to articulate the relationship between a ruler and his sphere, yet two very different patterns of relations can also be discerned. A close analysis of these materials discloses two contrasting concepts of governance and contributes to our understanding of the central role of spatial relationships in pre-modern ...
