Persecution and the Art of Writing between the Lines: De vita beata, Lactantius, and the Great Persecution

Patristics scholars and historians have tended to ignore Book 7 (De vita beata) of Lactantius’ Divine Institutes, a seeming pastiche of prophecies about the end times, penned between 306 and 310. If it is situated in the broader context of Porphyry of Tyre’s contemporary critique of the Book of Daniel as ex eventu prophecy, however, its diatribes against two ruling “ beasts” point to the emperors Diocletian and Galerius who had launched and pursued the “ Great Persecution” against the Christians. Pressing these parallels further suggests that the “ heavenly king” who will rescue the world and impose sole rule for a new millennium is none other than Constantine, who had gained control of the northwestern empire in 306.Persécution et l’art d’écrire entre les lignes : De vita beata, Lactance, et la Grande Persécution. Traditionnellement, les chercheurs patristiques et les historiens ont négligé le septième Livre (De vita beata) des Institutions divines de Lactance, apparemment un pastiche sur la fin des temps, écrit entre 306 et 310. Mais lu comme prophétie ex eventu dans le contexte plus large de la critique de Porphyre de Tyr sur le Livre de Daniel, l’attaque contre les deux “ bêtes” gouvernant se réfère aux empereurs Dioclétien et Galère, qui venaient de lancer la “ Grande Persécution” contre les Chrétiens. Patristici en historici hebben tot nu toe geen aandacht gehad voor Boek 7 (De vita beata) van de Divinae Institutiones van Lactantius. Dat boek, geschreven tussen 306 en 310, lijkt een pastiche van eindtijdprofetieën. Maar indien men het als een soort ex eventu profetie situeert in de ruimere context van de kritiek van Porphyrius van Tyr op het Boek Daniël, blijken de aanvallen op de twee regerende “ beesten” te verwijzen naar de Keizers Diocletianus en Galerius, die zonet de “ Grote Christenvervolging” hadden ingezet. In lijn hiermee kan men bovendien suggereren dat de “ goddelijke koning” die de wereld zal redden en zijn alleenheerschappij zal vestigen voor een nieuw millennium niemand anders is dan Constantijn, die sinds 306 het noordwestelijke deel van het Rijk regeerde.Digeser Elizabeth Depalma.
