Effect of grazing management on a water-fringe vegetation and impact strength after cessation of grazing in the Réserve naturelle nationale du Marais de Lavours (Ain, France). - In 1987, the Réserve naturelle nationale du Marais de Lavours began a management consisting in a cattle and horses grazing on an eutrophic sedge community (Carex elata). The aim was to restore the vegetation which was encroaching due to the lack of traditional agricultural practices. This grazing experiment ended after twelve years, because vegetation became more and more degraded. A vegetation survey was initiated in 1986 and lasted for 22 years ; it shows that plant communities underwent important modifications during grazing time and after the retreat of the herd...
