Tourism in New Caledonia. In the south-western part of the Pacific Ocean, New-Caledonia doesn't enjoy, contrarily to Tahiti and its nearby islands, a universally renowned name. New-Caledonia with its 82 900 tourists and 35 000 cruisers in the year 1993, has only a very secondary role in the touristic industry of the Pacific Islands dominated by the Hawaii Islands. Located in the zone of influence of Australia and New-Zealand, New-Caledonia only poorly profits by these two markets. The products it offers are too expensive and its touristic potential including its immense lagoon and its big spaces is largely unexploited as shown by the concentration of the accomodation capacity in Nouméa.
