A comparison of two types of Rice Growing Systems in the Circle of Mopti, Mali. Along with the traditional uncontrolled floodplain rice cultivation, two other systems of rice growing are practiced in the Niger Inner Delta of Mali : centrally operated large scale rice polders and more recently introduced small scale polders operated, by village communities. In this article, an attempt will be made to trace the limitations of those systems in relation to Mali's agricultural development policy, focused on national food self-sufficiency, and in relation also to the needs and possibilities (in terms of available labour) of the farmers.
