La théiculture rwandaise

The Rwandese tea cultivation and production. — As far back as 1954, the Government of Rwanda has tried to diversify its sources of income. Ranked second after coffee, tea is today the cash crop in the higland marshes and in the hills between 1 600 and 2 500 m. For a population accustomed to a severe way of life, tea provides a possible new monetary income. Moreover, tea has paved the way for the setting up of agro-industries in rural areas. This industrialization has provided employment opportunities, has built up financial disponibilities at grass root level, and has supplied the Government with additionnai income resulting from exportations.Dés 1954, le gouvernement rwandais a essayé de diversifier ses sources de revenus. Après le caféier, le théier est la culture commerciale des marais de montagne et des collines entre 1 600 m et 2 500 m d'altitude. C'est la source possible d'un revenu monétaire nouveau pour les populations qui ont une vie rude.
