Ethnies, peuplement et organisation de l'espace en Thaïlande septentrionale

Ethnie Groups, Settlers and Space Organization in Northern Thailand. — A map and an analysis of the distribution of ethnic groups in the North of Thailand call for a study of the history of settlement in this region, particularly since the beginning of the 19th century. The arrival of the Karens in the mountains that were occupied for a very long time by the Lua preceded that of the Tibeto-Burmans, and the Meo-Yao, opium growers, who settled down in these high regions. In the basins and in the valleys the different Thai ethnic groups were welded into a new ethnic category, the Khon Muang. One is thus led to redefine the concept of ethnic, which does not have the same meaning as that applied to the mountainers and to the Thai living in the lowlands. Contacts among the ethnic groups are very different, and depend upon the degree of social, economic and political integration with the dominant Thai society. In this respect, one can distinguish three zones : the lowlands, where the Khon Muang have a tendancy to assimilate all the other ethnic groups ; the mountain valleys, where the Lua Karen and, at times, the Khon Muang (in villages that produce miang) cohabit, regions that are marginal but which possess rather close contacts with the plains ; the mountain regions, where the Tibeto-Burmans and the Meo Yao are isolated by the mobility of their dwelling places and an ethnic barrier. There are thus various degrees of symbiosis between the mountains and the plains which can be expressed by a circular spatial model showing the center-periphery relations among the three zone levels.Une carte et une analyse de la répartition des ethnies dans le nord de la Thaïlande appellent une étude de l'histoire du peuplement surtout depuis le début du XIXe siècle. L'arrivée des Karen dans les montagnes occupées depuis très longtemps par les Lua (Lawa) a précédé celle des Tibéto-Birmans et des Meo-Yao, cultivateurs d'opium, qui se sont installés sur les hauteurs. Dans les bassins et les fonds de vallée, les différentes ethnies Thai se sont fondues dans une nouvelle catégorie ethnique, les Khon Muang. On est ainsi amené à préciser le concept d'ethnie qui n'a pas la même signification appliqué aux montagnards et aux Thai des terres basses. Les contacts entre les ethnies sont très différents selon leur niveau d'intégration sociale, économique et politique à la société Thai dominante. On peut distinguer à cet égard trois zones : les terres basses où les Khon Muang ont tendance à assimiler toutes les autres ethnies ; les vallées montagnardes où cohabitent Lua, Karen et parfois Khon Muang (villages produisant du miang), marginaux mais en contact plus ou moins étroit avec la plaine ; les hauteurs où Tibéto-Birmans et Meo Yao sont isolés par la mobilité de leur habitat et une barrière ethnique. Il existe ainsi divers degrés de symbiose entre montagnes et plaines qui peuvent s'exprimer dans un modèle spatial circulaire montrant les rapports centre-périphéries entre ces trois zones étagées.Bruneau Michel.
