Ethnie Groups, Settlers and Space Organization in Northern Thailand. — A map and an analysis of the distribution of ethnic groups in the North of Thailand call for a study of the history of settlement in this region, particularly since the beginning of the 19th century. The arrival of the Karens in the mountains that were occupied for a very long time by the Lua preceded that of the Tibeto-Burmans, and the Meo-Yao, opium growers, who settled down in these high regions. In the basins and in the valleys the different Thai ethnic groups were welded into a new ethnic category, the Khon Muang.
