When the Concept of “ Formula” Becomes an Epistemological Obstacle : Critical Remarks about the Notion of Stock of Prefabricated Formulas (Part I ). Is the concept of formula a powerful tool for understanding the formation of Homeric poetry ? In a lecture in 1984, Albert B. Lord denounced as a discouraging fact the constant reference in Homeric scholarship to the notion of a stock of prefabricated formulas. He added that Milman Parry had never advanced such an hypothesis. Browsing studies prior to 1984 and beyond, that have referred to these common stocks of formulas, this research, into two parts, wants to explore the story of a postulate which caused several misunderstandings in Homeric studies. Contrary to Lord’s claim, Parry contributed to this misunderstanding. Undoubtedly, the complexity of the Homeric language was greater than we could then consider it.La notion de formule est-elle un outil solide pour comprendre la formation de la poésie homérique ? Dans une conférence donnée en 1984, Albert B. Lord dénonçait comme un fait décourageant la référence constante dans les études sur la langue homérique à la notion d’un stock de formules préfabriquées. Il ajoutait que Milman Parry n’avait jamais avancé une telle hypothèse. Parcourant les travaux qui, avant 1984 et même après, ont fait référence à ces stocks de formules toutes faites, cette étude, en deux parties, veut questionner l’histoire d’un postulat qui a provoqué plusieurs malentendus dans la recherche.
