When the Concept of “ Formula” Becomes an Epistemological Obstacle : Critical Remarks about the Notion of Stock of Prefabricated Formulas (Part I ). Is the concept of formula a powerful tool for understanding the formation of Homeric poetry ? In a lecture in 1984, Albert B. Lord denounced as a discouraging fact the constant reference in Homeric scholarship to the notion of a stock of prefabricated formulas. He added that Milman Parry had never advanced such an hypothesis. Browsing studies prior to 1984 and beyond, that have referred to these common stocks of formulas, this research, into two parts, wants to explore the story of a postulate which caused several misunderstandings in Homeric studies.
