Bodies and Politics: The Emperor's Body in the Early Principate: A Historiographical Survey. The article aims to give a survey of recent scholarship on the body of the Roman emperor. It will be argued that unlike kings in established monarchies, early emperors were unable to incorporate a royal role. In Rome, the idea of an eternal body politic was tightly connected with the old republic that was essentially antimonarchic and could thus not be incorporated by an emperor without causing serious ideological problems. The lack of royal insignia and monarchic performance caused monarchic projections to focus on the emperor's individual body, making it the object of new discourses.L'objet de cet article est de proposer un bilan historiographique...
