By comparing Imberios et Margarona to its probable French model, the novel Pierre de Provence et la belle Maguelonne, this study attempts to show that the Greek adaptors, in particular, the writer of the rimed version, printed in Venice beginning in 1543, did not content themselves to produce a liberal translation of their source. The modifications they made to their model on various levels (to the plot, the narrative logic, the motifs) combine to profoundly Hellenize the characters, especially Imberios himself. This is notably the case of the rimed version, which mentions the hero’s return to the “orthodox faith”.
