Urban Growth in the Sahara : Ghardaïa. The growth of Ghardaïa owes nothing to the usual factors of urban development, but its founders had discovered there the isolation for which they searched. Later on, after the planting of a few palm groves, saharan trade and the emigration of men to the Tell brought to Ghardaïa increasing resources. The population of the five towns — Ghardaïa, Melika, Beni Isguen, Bou Noura, El Ateuf — continues to augment : it now totals 53,000 inhabitants, of which 32,000 live in Ghardaia. This population is diverse : Arabs and Negroes almost outnumber the Mzabites, already a minority in Ghardaïa itself.
