Le grec de Paul Diacre

The Farnesianus, the only extant manuscript of Festus’ lexicon, has numerous words in Greek characters, whereas the manuscripts of Paulus Diaconus’ epitome only present Latin adaptations of the Greek etymons. This article first investigates what importance Verrius Flaccus gave to the Greek origins of Rome and of the Latin language in his De uerborum significatu, then examines how Paulus Diaconus adapted his epitome for his contemporaries, who had not mastered Greek.Lhommé Marie-Karine.
