Évolution des indéfinis existentiels (quis, aliquis, quisquam) et de quisque en latin tardif

The confusion between the various indefinite pronouns (quis, quidam, aliquis, quisquam, and quisque as well) in Late Latin is a well-known fact. The present research investigates only syntactic conditions in which competition between “existential” indefinite pronouns is allowed, i.e. contexts in Classical Latin common to these pronouns: structures in which their opposition could be neutralized or structures in which they occur together. Conditional clauses and generic statements seem to have made it easier for aliquis and quidam to become non-specific pronouns in competition with quis or quisquam. In a similar way, quisque seems to have become a strenghtened form of quis in conditional clauses.Bortolussi Bernard.
