The two well-known theses concerning the origin of the Romance languages are discussed in this paper, that which postulates a chronological succession of Classical and Vulgar Latin, and that which presumes their simultaneity. On the basis of the recent literature the respective arguments are reconsidered and a synthesis will be proposed which shows that the apparently contradictory theses are not incompatible, and to what degree they are only partly accurate.Kiesler Reinhard.
