From horse to tram'. The mechanization of urban transports. 1850-1900. At the verge of the 19th century, a real revolution occured in urban transports (electrification of tramways, increase of car use). However, a great interest is taken in the time-lag of railway mechanization, on the right track in the 1820's, and the mechanization of transports inside the towns the growth of which was quickened by this railway mechanization. The increasing density of towns led to the development of many innovations such as mansions without bringing innovations in transports which would have created a new urban pattern. The paper tries to give an explanation to this delay.Une véritable révolution dans les transports urbains s'est produite au tournant du XIXe siècle Electrification des tramways, développement de l'automobile). Pourtant, le décalage entre la mécanisation des chemins de fer, en bonne voie dans les années 1820, et la mécanisation des transports à l'intérieur des villes (dont la croissance fut accélérée par cette même mécanisation des chemins de fer) est un élément intéressant. La densification des villes a entraîné la diffusion de bon nombre d'innovations, tel l'immeuble de rapport, sans susciter, sur le plan des transports, les innovations qui auraient créé une autre trame urbaine. Se sabe que una verdadera revolución en el transporte urbano, se produjo hacia el final del siglo XIX (electrification de los transvías, desarrollo del automóvil). No obstante, es llamativa la desproporción entre la mecanización de los ferrocarriles, avanzados en los años 1820, y la mecanización de los transportes dentro de las ciudades cuyo crecimiento supo acelerar, por esta misma mecanización, a los ferrocarriles. La densificación de las ciudades acarreó la diffusión de gran número de innovaciones, taies como los edificios para alquilar, sin suscitar innovaciones en el plan de los transportes que habrían creado otra trama urbana.
