L’univers du gamelan : opposition théorique et unicité fondamentale

The Universe of Gamelan : Theoretical Opposition and Fundamental Unity This article describes how Western conceptions about music distorted the modern theory of gamelan music, to the point of describing it in a way that is in complete opposition to the values and referents of the traditional culture. On this unstable base, an unnecessary musicological and anthropological confusion accrued via the creation, in the 1950’ s, of gatra, a teleological grouping of 4 melodic tones. Gatra was conceptually inspired by Javanese poetic rules and notation, but subsequently treated as a temporal yardstick to replace the 4/ 4 bars previously adopted. But gatra does not constitute a satisfactory notation of rhythm : as a result, scores meld gatra’s teleological time to an acrological notation of rhythm, as in Western bars. Some ethnomusicologists, notably J. and A. Becker in the late 1970s, nonetheless presented a fundamentally non-linear structure resembling a musical mandala, which is closer to the sonic cosmology of ancient local treatises about gamelan music. By abandoning gatra and other Western parameters, and by creating a new system of notation for the sonic architecture, C. Basset brings to light a musical and cultural coherence which should resolve the theory-based opposition between the concentric structures of gamelan music and the teleological melodic sentences (of song and individual instruments) that are layered in the refined music of the Javanese gendhing. Seen thus, the contemporary gendhing appears as an aesthetic combination of the composite sound of the rituals, not betraying tradition, but being at the height of tradition, as it pretends to be.L’univers du gamelan : opposition théorique et unicité fondamentale Cet article décrit comment les a priori musicologiques occidentaux ont distordu la théorie moderne de la musique de gamelan, au point de la décrire à l’opposé des valeurs et référents de la culture traditionnelle. Sur cette base bancale, une inutile confusion musicologique et anthropologique a été ajoutée par la création, dans les années 1950, du gatra, une unité téléologique de 4 notes. Inspirée des règles et de la notation de la poésie javanaise, le gatra a été traité comme une mesure du temps remplaçant la mesure à 4/ 4 occidentale précédemment adoptée. Mais le gatra ne permet pas de noter le rythme de façon satisfaisante, si bien que dans les partitions, le temps téléologique de la «mesure-gatra » a dû être superposé à son opposé, l’écriture acrologique du rythme (telle que dans les mesures occidentales). Certains ethnomusicologues, notamment J. and A. Becker à la fin des années 1970, mettaient pourtant en lumière une structure fondamentale non linéaire et même un mandala musical, plus près de la cosmologie sonore des traités locaux anciens sur la musique de gamelan. En se départissant du gatra comme de tout paramètre occidental, et en créant un système de notation représentant l’architecture sonore, C. Basset a mis en évidence une cohérence musicale et culturelle qui devrait faire cesser l’opposition théorique entre la structure concentrique carillonnée au gamelan et les phrasés mélodiques téléologiques (du chant poétique et des instruments individuels) qui s’y superposent dans la musique sophistiquée du gendhing javanais. Ainsi considéré, le gendhing javanais contemporain apparaît comme une combinaison esthétique du son composite des rituels, non pas une trahison de la tradition, mais bien l’apogée qu’il prétend être.Basset Catherine.
