The study of Greek settlement in Western Greece – Sicily and Southern Italy – has long been preoccupied with the problem of relating the various different ethnic groups described in the textual record with the archaeological evidence. This paper explores some of the anomalies presented by the two sets of evidence and suggests that social rather than ethnic priorities may lie behind the formulation of material culture, especially those assemblages (such as burials) which display “ mixed” features arguably derived from different cultural sources.
