Following the reflection of Nicole Loraux on the impossibility of writing a history of women that goes beyond their representations, I propose to explore this question as it manifests itself in the difficulty of 20th Century women's to "enter" intellectual traditions within which part of their experiences as thinking subjects remains invisible or difficult to communicate. Given women's absence from the position of the subject and the profusion of images of them, the female subject's appropriation of tradition is often problematic without a process of rememoration/ reinvention of experiences that tradition has silenced or prevented from being actualized.
