Le contingent, le libre, le nécessaire. Bergson critique de la métaphysique

Bergson's doctrine of freedom has often been read in a purely internal way. This article seeks to reinstate Bergson's theses in the dialogue, sometimes explicit, often implicit, which they maintain with the history of metaphysics. The criticism of the notion of possible pre-existing its realisation leads Bergson to break with the Scotist concept of contingency as a determination of a state of things, the opposite of which is possible at the same moment; contrary to this "synchronie" definition of contingency which underlies all of the modern controversies on free will, Bergson returns to an understanding of the contingent closer to that of Aristotle, in which time, or rather duration, plays a determining role. Hence his original conception of the free act as an action that is new, unforeseeable. (Transl. by J. Dudley).La doctrine bergsonienne de la liberté a souvent été lue de manière purement interne. Cet article s'efforce de replacer les thèses de Bergson dans le dialogue, parfois explicite, souvent implicite, qu'elles entretiennent avec l'histoire de la métaphysique. La critique de la notion de possible pré-existant à son actualisation conduit Bergson à rompre avec le concept scotiste de contingence comme détermination d'un état de choses dont l'opposé est possible au même instant; à l' encontre de cette définition «synchronique» de la contingence qui sous-tend toutes les controverses modernes sur le libre arbitre, Bergson revient à une compréhension du contingent plus proche de celle d'Aristote, où le temps, ou plutôt la durée, joue un rôle déterminant.
